"More, More, More," Said the Baby

by Vera B. Williams

Read October 18th, 2008

I gotta admit, this was not one of my favorite books.  The idea is cute.  I don't know, maybe it's because I'm sick and grumpy.

The books is composed of three different stories showing love between a baby and an adult.  First there is Little Guy and his Daddy, then Little Pumpkin and his Grandmother, and lastly Little Bird and her Mama.

The pictures are colorful, I'm not sure how they were made, but they appear to be painted.  Even the words on the page were colorful.

The first story, I think what bothered me is seeing the daddy swing the baby around by the arms.  Maybe it's just my own paranoia coming into play.  My own daughter has dislocated her elbow 4 times from doing much less.

The second story, my daughter had a cute reaction to.  Little Pumpkin is obviously either adopted or mixed race, because he is dark and grandma has very pale skin and blond hair.  My daughter said "Hey, that's just like ___ "  A friend of ours, who is white and has an adopted son who is black.  She says, "they don't match but they still love each other."  I just thought it was cute.  Multiculturalism (did I make tha word up?) in the yes of a 5 year-old.

The third story Little Bird falls asleep and her mother picks her up off of the couch and rocks her to sleep while she puts her to bed.

Not a bad book.  Just not my favorite.  Can't really give you a good reason.

This book won the Caldecott Honor in 1991.
