Fox
by Kate Banks, illustrated by Georg Hallensleben

I really wish this book had a better title.  It's just so....boring.  I actually fell in love with the illustrations.  Just lovely simple paintings.

The story is about the first year of little fox's life.  His parents care for him and teach him how to store food, stay safe in the woods, and cover his trail.  At every turn he is asking to go off on his own, and his parents tll him not yet.

I did have to explain what a teat was. :) which was an interesting conversation.  I actually found the story a little sad.  Little Fox is so eager to be on his own and then when his parents say he is ready, he just runs off...on his own.  My daughter says, "he will come back and see his mommy right?"  I'm not usually one for lying to my daughters, but when they personify an animal and give it human traits, I can't exactly explain that foxes only stay with their mothers for a short time.  So, with a bit of shame, I lied.  She is only 5 and can find out about the true story later.

Am I bad for not telling the truth?!
