Again, Barefoot Books has an awesome summary so I will again quote them directly. If you haven't checked out their site, do so. They have all sorts of titles and it's organized by topic. Very nice. They even have some hard to find titles.
Here is their summary:
"An impressive book both as a historically authentic Civil War novel and as a beautifully written family story." -University of Chicago Center for Children's Books
The unforgettable story of young Jethro Creighton, who comes of age during the turbulent years of the Civil War, by the Newbery Award-winning author Irene Hunt. Poignant, heartwarming, and heart-breaking story of an Illinois farm family and their saga during the Civil War. Insightful look at how war affects even the closest families. Well-researched and highly recommended.
