Darkly Dreaming Dexter
by Jeff Lindsay
Read September 2008
Now, I nearly gave this book a lower rating than it deserved. It truly is well written, with an intriguing plot. It makes you actually like a serial killer.
Thing thing that made it so tedious for me to read is that I have seen and love the TV show. The book is virtually the script for the show. The ending is different, but up until the last 6 chapters it's just like the show.
I'm not sure how this book would have felt to me if I hadn't seen the series first. I would say that the main complaint I have about books turned in to movies/shows is that they don't stay true to the spirit of the book. Like I said before, it's almost like they never hired a scriptwriter for the first few episodes. There are a few things done differently, but overall pretty much the same, apart from the ending.
Another complaint I have about books turned into movies/series is casting. I think that Michael C. Hall is a perfect Dexter. Now I'm not sure if I would feel the same way if I hadn't seen him as Dexter in the series first.
Anyways...The book is very good...and inspired a great TV series.
